newspapertree.com/features/3676-forgotten-childrenForgotten children by Cassandra Davisson "242 children will spend the day standing perfectly still in front of the UTEP Geology Building. The children are cardboard, but their message is real. State Records show more than 242 children in foster care in El Paso County await a CASA volunteer to speak up for them in court." At 10 a.m. on April 14, the Geology lawn at UTEP was pierced with 242 cutouts of children representing the 242 children that are in the foster care system with out a CASA volunteer. Court Appointed Special Advocates speak on behalf of foster children in court and as a result, are able to facilitate the process of moving into a permanent, safe home. People who become a CASA volunteer must pass an extensive background check and 32 hours of training. In addition to volunteering your time, CASA also accepts monetary donation as well as luggage. On the Geology lawn volunteers stopped students and others passing by who seemed interested in the display. CASA volunteers took down names and contact info of people for the next training session which will be April 24-28th. If you are interested in helping abused and neglected children or know someone who is your are encouraged to call (915)546-8146 or visit www.casaofelpaso.comAnyone have any experience with CASA?

this organization does great advocacy work for children Is it heart wrenching for the advocate? it can be if the advocate has no experience being around kids who have been severely neglected and/or abused. It can be even harder if there has been any sexual abuse. But they receive some training to prepare and help them deal with this
