I have to say, I have no use for someone that beats a dog to death. I agree Rosa. Grotesque harassment should not occur, but neither can women afford to be hyper-sensitive to joking around. It's that sensitivity that perpetuates the stereotype that Pfc. Daisy is too weak or emotional.

It's that sensitivity that perpetuates the stereotype that Pfc. Daisy is too weak or emotional. I agree. Which is why there should be more calls for investigations into the injuries and deaths that come from such incidents. So that more definitive lines can be drawn by military officials in terms of what is acceptable, unacceptable and illegal behavior in the cases we are discussing, I think I have even less respect or "use" for a system of "justice" which enables soldiers to harm each other in this manner, to then minimize it. Rape isn't "harassment", nor is murder worse yet, when you compare these two cases in particular... that female soldier's life was worth less than a dog's, in terms of how "justice" was meted out...

I do wish you would stop redefining the debate or at least give me notice when you're going to. "Grotesque harassment" is not my term and I was actually agreeing with you but now we're talking about rape and murder. Yeah, okay rape and murder (although, I gotta tell you, I don't like to define things in terms like that where I don't know all the facts) are much more serious than harassment. If you want to narrow the terms of this discussion to whether rape and murder should be tolerated in the military, then I daresay we're probably all in agreement. Of course these things should be punished severely (hey, I bet I'm the only here that supports capital punishment). Then again, I would feel that way no matter the gender of the victim.

I'm not redefining the debate, And since when do you need advance notice anyway?! I'm picking the worst reported cases of crimes committed that are discussed in the article. In some circles, it could be argued that harassment is even a crime, though even I would be hard pressed to go that way--because from what little I've observed on my own, anyone joining the military has to put up with stuff I'd definitely call harassment. and frankly, short of a very stroong desire to see the world or escape home, I've always thought that someone who wants to join the military has rocks in the head because of the abuse he/she has to put up with. But that's just me and besides, joining the fire dept ain't like joining the military web. I let that one go...so just calm yourself down there and go with it. And by the way, the article doesn't deal with the numbers of gay victims who've experienced similar crimes...but I didn't go there either chill dude go get a cookie

Ah, I see, I failed to respect the parameters of this thread you started. I thought it was a topic subject to a broader discussion, and you just wanted to bash the military.

One of the times I went to Iraq I had to attend the mandatory "Sexual Harassment" death by Power Point presentations. The thing was an hour long and dealt with what the guy could be charged with if he sexually harassed a female. When all was said and done I raised my hand and asked a simple question, "If a man faces a mandatory 10 years in Leavenworth for rape or 2 years time for sexual harassment, how long of a sentence can a woman expect if she falsly make calims against another male soldier?" The answer was it is up to the military judge. I of course said well you have all of these mandatory sentences against men it's total bull crap that women aren't under the same regulations." The men cheared and the women glared at me and afterwards chidded me for being insensitive to women's causes. You can imagine what I told those B@#$HS.
