Tucked away in El Paso’s lower valley lies a house. The house’s name is Reynolds House. The home belonging to Dr. Reynolds, had been passed down to his daughter, who in turn set the home up as a shelter for the homeless. Since 1990 the house has acted as a haven to those without a place to live. Those who currently live in the house are primarily women or women with children. Up to twenty-seven women have lived at the house through out the period of one year. At the time there are eight families living in the house all of them are single moms.
Currently Reynolds house is run by Dorothy Truax. Her brothers and sisters have been involved on a volunteer basis with the home for 18 years and still continue to do so. Her brother runs the Opportunity Center which has other homeless programs and works along with other shelters in El Paso. Dorothy works mainly with homeless youth and usually brings them to Reynolds House if she cannot find other shelters for them. She will tell us more about the home. Reynolds House is the only shelter that is run on a volunteer basis and does not have federal or city funding nor is there a paid staff on hand.
A recent death in the family has got the Truax brothers and sisters to thinking about how old they are getting. This means that they need to start figuring out ways for the family business to cary on and that even thought they love what they do, they cant do it forever. Dorothy personally would like to see the home continue to be a homeless shelter long after she dies. There are a some issues though that might be factors to putting and end to it. One of those issues is money. Because its not run like a formal shelter should be getting the funding form the city is harder. It solely relies on donations and hopefully they are able to find grants.
