In channelling Molly these days, I'm looking for humor in politics, and places like El Paso certainly don't disappoint; I'm wondering what you guys think
1
it's hard to resist the impulse to poke fun at the affected outrage I recently read on a local forum-someone complaining about NPT's "new" ownership, Snil you write for these guys
someone is claiming the thing is now owned by the vast right wing conspirators, that they collect data on you if you post comments there (but no other forum, politically affiliated news source, etc. in El Paso does, mind you) in order to intimidate you
um, would someone like to take a shot and explain why it is suddenly a "well-kept" conspiratorial secret? Something we've known all along--that NPT is owned/controlled by right-leaning heavies in town?
I mean, really. THis is silly ;D

Former candidate Louis Irwin recently took the high road in offering "alternative" explanations as to why someone like Marisa Marquez would be so moved to opine on political factionism/cronyism. This is over on Jaime Abeytia's recent NPT plaint regarding the ongoing feud between Chavez and Marquez-thinly disguised in Abeytia's attempt to "discuss" Marquez's recent editorial.
Far be it for me to defend either Chavez or Abeytia-neither deserves it, to start with. But Marquez deserves no quarter either. And what I find a little disturbing is the effort made by Irwin to whitewash a dispute between factions by implicitly defending Marquez, who handily contributed to innuendo and outright lies during her campaign against Paul Moreno.
By re-interpreting this latest attempt to point fingers by using the media, Irwin's own perspective becomes suspect, given how he appears to forget recent history. Further, his shot at the high road falls flat, given that his "explanation" aligns itself with one faction over another-so what was the point? To remind us of who we have in Chavez? Does he think we don't know?
I remember the things Marquez said and did during her campaign against Moreno, and I think she lied and supported lies in order to win that seat. Heck, I am still wondering if she completed her degree as she claimed she did, because last I heard, she still has an active Notre Dame email addy. Perhaps she is a strong believer in continuing education. And I digress... You all know I never thought she was a Democrat to begin with.
I've made no secret of this. I've always believed Marquez is one among several "in name only" Dems who declares herself accordingly, in order to be electable in this county. And I've repeatedly insisted that Norma Chavez deserves a good deal of credit for having used her own heavies (tactics) to help Marquez out during that election. Both these gals commodified emnity and factionalism, they used divisiveness every bit as much as other factions did during that campaign. And they both use divisiveness to their own ends now. [/i]It is hypocritical for either one to claim any part of an alternatve historical accounting of where local Democrats should be now, if they want to do so by saying they are opposed to party dis-unity.
Marquez received a great deal of assitance when she arrived in Austin, and she has done some work for her constituents, which she is expected to do. Eliot Shapleigh's influence, the assistance she's received from others notwithstanding, her record includes her behavior during her campaign against Moreno. As such, I expect to see and hear lies from Marisa Marquez and Eliot Shapleigh, but not from Louis Irwin. Having been subjected to a certain amount of slants during his own campaign, he ought to be above perpetuating such "alternative" explanations for what is going on. If he is doing this in the name of party unity, he's alientaing people who can see the truth (on various sides) for what it really is.
Now for the "humor" part. Web, this is to you: I've taken you on a number of times regarding Moody, and each and every time, I defended Irwin as having been a potentially better choice. After reading a little on his blog and his latest contrbution to the Marquez/Chavez cat fight, not only does Moody deserve credit for the work he's done during his first term, but for holding himself above some of the fracas here
um....and it pains me to say this
but, I think I owe you a beer ;D
