Well, it looks like there has been movement on this issue. What bothers me the most about this whole nepotism issue is that the rules are not consistent at all levels of government. I mean the classic example at the highest level - who hired Bobby Kennedy as Attorney General?
In this specific case the thing that takes it to a higher level of unethical behavior (I guess illegal since there is a criminal indictment) is that the appearance is the 2 judges entered into a quid quo pro - you hire my relative and I hire yours. These are judges for gosh sakes you would think their respect for the law alone would make them not hire any relatives just to avoid the APPEARANCE of wrong doing.
Judges Arditti, Barraza indicted on nepotism charges By Ramon Bracamontes / El Paso Times Posted: 11/19/2009 12:18:47 PM MST
EL PASO - A grand jury today indicted two state court judges on allegations that they hired one another's relatives for well-paying jobs. Indicted were suspended state district court Judge Manuel Barraza and District Court Judge Regina Arditti. They are accused of violating state nepotism laws.
A third elected official, Justice of the Peace Sissy Hernandez, was also indicted. She is charged with hiring a family member, according to the indictment.
The charges against Arditti and Barraza are class C misdemeanors and are punishable by a fine of up to $1,000. Barraza was suspended last spring afrer a federal grand jury indicted him on corruption charges.
Arditti is currently the presiding judge of the 448th courtroom.

Yeah, but snil this happens at all levels of government, as unethical as it is, and it's been going on for decades
that said, what's the point of indicting someone if the penalty is what this one is? How much money will be spent trying this case? How much is that fine? Shouldn't the penalty be something that'd discourage the practice in the first place?
