When we stop having feelings like compassion for our fellow men, women and children, we will have become machines.
"Law" without compassion is a yoke on the necks of oxen.
"Those who conduct themselves with morality, integrity and consistency need not fear the forces of inhumanity and cruelty." Nelson Mandela -- RIP

Terri, The only time compassion should come into play is during the sentencing phase. Whether or not someone broke the law whould always remain with applying the law. So remember if you are going to kill your abusive partner kill them with a knife, hatchet, hammer, burning bed. Never use a gun as there are mandatory 10 year sentences applied. Well even a burning bed can get you into trouble as there would be arson laws that apply. And in the day of an expanded EPA they may bring you up on federal "Clean Air Act" charges.

Ivy, I think we've danced to this one before --
But... sometimes following the "Law" isn't the moral, in the sense of the humane, thing to do, although it may be the legal thing to do. The Romans made laws that were immoral/inhumane (Jesus Christ). The Nazis made laws that were immoral; the Muslims made laws that are immoral (Sharia); The British made laws that were immoral (American Revolution), The South Africans (Apartheid); Americans made/make laws that were immoral (slavey, harboring runaways, Jim Crow. interracial marriage, and some believe abortion, etc.). I could name a thousand other instances.
Isn't LAW supposed to be a reflection of "morality", and according to many in this country, based on the principles of Christianity? Shouldn't an Immigration Policy be based on the same principles?
I'm talking about the "Law", which comes first. The trial and sentencing comes after and should be based on humane laws. When it's not.....well, that's why I'm not good jury material, and would like to think I would have made a lousy Nazi.

Terri, I've asked myself if I could be part of "jury nullification" in some cases. The answer is yes I could. When it came to large sentences for simple possession of pot or some smuck getting pulled over and the cop sees a weapon (when it's supposed to be concealed )and getting arrested, or some guy who's parter was kicking his behind and he slaps her to get her away from him and she calls 911 and he gets arrested on domestic abuse charges because he wouldn't press charges against her. So am I being hypocritical? In essence, yes I am. I sometimes like to have my cake and eat it too. The "law" is the law. It should be followed until it's changed under all circumstatnces and let the judicial system sort them out. Then you have such cases as when Texas established the "Castle Law" where your vehicle was considered part of your home. Our idiotic District Attorney felt himself above that law and ordered police and Sheriff's to arrest anyone with a concealed weapon in their car "no matter what and let the courts settle the issue". I would have loved to be on any of those cases and there were dozens.

funny you should bring up the guy whose partner is kifcking his behind.
That actually happened to a friend I know.
His wife, ( big girl BTW ), beating him with her fists. He back hands her to get her off him, and is arrested for domestic violance. She wants te charges dropped, EP DA tells her hell no, now he has to stand trial.
aint nothing like getting raped by the judicial system huh?

The FBI has reported female arrests for domestic violence is up 30% over the past 5 years, The reason? Men have finally gotten the hint that "someone" is going to jail if the cops are called and are reporting it more and pressing charges more. The cops and the courts used to look at men as "wussies" if they reported their women partners for domestic abuse. Sadly they still do as only 1 in 15 women actually have those charges stick. Remember how much grief Chuck Finely got by the press and other players after he pressed charges when he literally got his face, ribs and pitching arm kicked by his wife Tawny Kitaen's high heels in his car during an argument?
