I may be showing my failing memory, but during the Presidential Election John McCain kept talking about eliminating Pork Barrel expenditure, and was dismissed by his opponents who kept saying - the pork is so little it will have no effect on the budget deficit.
Now that all the other issues that clouded this one during the election have gone away with the election noise ...
Anyone else wish someone had said, you're right it won't do much for the deficit, but what else could that money have been used for? How many free medical clinics, or textbooks, or assistance for disabled could that money spent on the road to no where, or the square dance museum or... could that money have purchased?
As a start I'd like to see a bill (actually it could be handled by a rule change in Congress) that all earmarks stand alone - not buried in any other department appropriation bill. Better yet - every department appropriation (defense, education etc) stands alone and is voted on alone.

no more "bridges to nowhere"?
I think I could actually hear some politicians argue that this would bog down the process because they'd have to argue for each one on its own merits
