www.elpasotimes.com/newupdated/ci_11247646Mexico says more US drug aid expected by January Associated Press Article Launched: 12/17/2008 07:41:26 AM MST MEXICO CITY - A top official in Mexico's Foreign Relations Department says the second installment of U.S. anti-drug aid should be released by January. Undersecretary for North American affairs Carlos Rico says Mexico expects the U.S. to release $116 million in drug-fighting aircraft and equipment before President George W. Bush leaves office Jan. 20. The U.S. on Dec. 3 released $197 million under the so-called Merida Initiative. The $1.3 billion package over three years includes helicopters and surveillance aircraft, airport inspection equipment and case-tracking software to help police share real-time intelligence. More than 5,300 people have died in drug-related killings in Mexico in 2008 Ñ more than double the number last year, the government says. OK, maybe I am ignorant of the drug trade (well actually there is no maybe), But if we took the $1.3Billion and just purchased the Pot and/or Coke, unprocessed directly from the "farmers" couldn't we put the dealers out of business. Think about it. You are a pot grower, right now you sell to drug cartels who pretty much tell you what they will pay, if you do not like it you die. Well now the US Government buys it direct and provides "security" for your farm (Can you say Blackwater). Who would you rather sell to, do you think that would cost us less and eliminate the corrupt Gov. middle men? ;D

this is sickening, what with the bailouts ongoing in particular
all we are doing is enabling a corrupt government, we know it and yet we continue to do it
we're the biggest addicts in the world!
