"Russia To Ban U.S. From International Space Station". I read those headlines and said WTF!!! First off Russia can't ban us from the International Space Station (ISS), What they can do is to not give us a ride to the ISS on their spacecraft to the tune of $70 million a ride. They can also ban sales of rocket engines to U.S. companies and our military. Okay now jsut why isn't the U.S. building our own heavy lift booster rockets? 5 letters...O-B-A-M-A.
Okay you Obamunists will scream that it was Bush that ordered the grounding of the aging Space Shuttle fleet. Yes indeed Bush did do that. But and this is a huge BUT, Bush also signed into budget a relacement heavy lift booster and space capsule called the Constellation with a heavy lift Aries V rocket and Orien Crew Cabin. Obama in 2010 ordered both programs scrapped. He approved the Aries I booster but not a single bolt has been turned on that booster. The consequesnces of that? We now have to buy Russian made boosters to put our own satelites into orbit, the RD-180 heavy lift and NK-33 light to medium booster. We are not even producing replacement boosters for our aging Minuteman III or Peacekeeper ICBM's.
Enter Boeing and Lockheed Martin who formed a joint venture called United Launch Alliance (ULA) using the Atlas V rocket. The Air Force gave them a no-bid contract to put our satelites into spoace leaving Space-X and other independent space venture companies completely out of the loop. Well guess what boosters ULA was using? If you guessed the RD-180 Russian made booster you would be correct. In that lies the fatal flaw of the U.S. space program.
Space-X's Elon Musk testified before the Senate Appropriations Defense Subcommittee in March, you see, trying to convince the Senators to open up competition on contracts to launch military satellites into space. And he warned the Senate that the company that currently has a near monopoly on this business, the Boeing and Lockheed Martin joint venture United Launch Alliance, has a fatal flaw:
By relying on Russia to supply the engines for its Atlas V rockets, ULA risks having its supply chain interrupted. This might happen if Russia should decide, for example, to embargo sale of these engines to America in retaliation for sanctions imposed over Russia's invasion of Crimea.
Okay, so then Puten gets a hair up his butt and decides to have a little swaray in Ukrain. Obama puts sanctions against Russian diplomats, businessmen and companies. What do you think Puten did? Well he is threatening an embargo of booster shhipments despite an up to 2017 contract to supply boosters to the ULA. He also will stop all U.S. astonauts from traveling on his Soyuz spacraft starting 2020.
Upset at America's imposition of travel restrictions on Russian government and industry officials -- himself included -- Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin lashed out at the U.S. this week. In public statements and in tweets, Rogozin promised to block the sale of NPO Energomash RD-180 rocket engines to ULA, objecting to their use in launching U.S. military satellites into space
So now our space program has been gutted and the Obama administration has forced us to rely on the Russians. Puten goes into the Crimea and Obama demands and gets sanctions agaisnt Russia. Puten stops sending boosters to ULA who received a no bid contract to put our own satelites in space bypassing Space-X and the others. Well guess what? Oh those pesky consequences of progressive legislation and leaders decisions...are you paying attention there Barry? Or is that somehow where you wanted all of this to go to begin with to knock the U.S. down a peg or two?
