by NPT Staff From the shameless self-promotion file, a news release that went out this morning:

· Refuse the Juice with DavidK from 6-8 a.m. Competition: Bill Bennett 600am, and starting at 7am Greg & Gene show 1150am and Glen Beck 690am)

Talkback Radio (noun) - a broadcast in which telephone comments or questions from the public are transmitted live
“The El Paso Media Group team of writers and radio hosts have the ability to frame the issues that matter to this market in a smart and compelling way, which will lead to the best in talk radio this market has to offer. With this project, we’re making our news and opinions available to all audiences at no cost (I guess XM wouldn't bite) , with video streaming and pod casting capabilities. Univision (The name says it all) is the ideal partner in this project with a team of radio professionals that seek to take talk radio to the next level,” says El Paso Media Group publisher and president Keith Mahar.
Tune in to 920 AM and listen live on Feb. 2, starting at 6 a.m. Call in and let us know what you think at 915.544.0920
All of the above commentary is said in jest.

I am a little confused. It sounds like this is the same group of people that were on the radio before.

Rosa, that's hilarious (I'm not sure you meant it to be). There are folks that would be highly offended that you don't know the difference between local talk show hosts. I'm with you, by way.

There isn't much difference as far as I've heard. If there was, I would tune in.

Okay, I just read up on this. This is Keith Mahar's baby. He bought himself a bunch of "hosts" and will be doing the same thing Candelaria was doing over on the other station. So, what is "new" about this?
He owns NPT-this is funny.

to "inform"? I doubt that....one corporate entity controlling the news. So we only get one side of any given story.
This is "talkback" radio. Talk-back from what? To whom? This is selling what the other station had to sell. How is this different, exactly? I'm not getting a clear picture and of course, the news isn't saying anything informative. It's just more advertising.

Well, my husband came home with a grin on his face yesterday, saying he'd been listening to the talk radio and that on Mahar's station, La Gringa was encouraging votes from listeners (taking an informal poll, actually) on whether or not El Paso should keep the Asarco smokestack as a historical monument of sorts he commented that there were a couple of callers who talked about the fact that the smoke stack, like Juarez, was an eyesore, and that they didn't like looking out that way when they had to drive the freeway. It bothers them to see Juarez, the poverty, the "ugly" way it looks so, husband decided to "vote with my finger" and he switched over to Hudnall's show, where the host and callers were trying to figure out how many more "tax-impaired" politicians Obama was going to encounter. To his amusement, some were even trying to figure out if there was a formula one could use to encourage attention from the president, given that he seems to be pretty fond of people who don't pay their taxes. I realize the show hosts aren't responsible for what their callers say, however, I am kind of under the impression that La Gringa wasn't able to deal with the underlying prejudice behind certain comments...it makes me wish I'd heard the show myself, because my husband isn't usually given to strong reactions based upon what he hears on the radio. I hope this isn't indicative of the "quality" entertainment that Mahar is going to produce, but it sure reminds me of a lot of the underlying racist attitudes behind the complaints over that huge Mexican flag that they set up in Juarez too. And the man doesn't have the greatest track record when it comes to transparency, openness in his own political leanings............... I wonder if I google, whether or not Keith Mahar is still the "group" behind "El Paso Media 'Group' " It sure makes me think twice about what you said, snil. He's trying to create an "empire".

Well his Empire keeps getting delayed. Now the new line up is scheduled for Monday 2/9. Maybe they took a vote in Juarez and it decided his new line up would be an eyesore?

I looked back yesterday and I realize that everyone in this so-called line-up supports the "progressive" line in El Paso. Always struck me as a better way to go if you had a diverse line-up. As a listener, all this does is justify why I don't give these people my time or attention

I have to admit, I certainly haven't paid much attention. The way this guy works, snil, it's all a matter of quiet "transparency", see? ;D I have heard each of these hosts at one time or another. If the intention is to "inform", it's just mind-boggling where that will fit in....the only one who's ever struck me as making a passable effort at objectivity/fairness was Negron and he does as good a job at that, as he does in his work for Mahar's NPT. It's just not there.

Rosa, he's off KQBU, but says he'll be somewhere else soon. Apparently he didn't get along with Lisa D.

Webrunner, this is funny. It's a poor imitation of the soaps, but it is funny. Thanks for sharing!
